The Maldives has recorded a significant increase in revenue from departure tax and airport development fees, collecting over MVR 1.7 billion in the first six months of the year.
According to the Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA), MVR 879.9 million was collected as departure tax between January and June this year, a 48 per cent increase compared to the MVR 594.5 million collected during the same period in 2024.
Meanwhile, revenue from the airport development fee totalled MVR 885.8 million in the first six months of 2025, representing a 46 per cent increase from the MVR 606.7 million recorded during the same period last year.
Combined, the two streams of revenue accounted for 10.6 per cent of the government’s total revenue for the period, according to MIRA.
The departure tax has been in effect since 1 January 2022 and is levied on all passengers departing from airports in the Maldives. The Airport Development Fee, on the other hand, is specifically charged to passengers departing from Velana International Airport.
