The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works and the Male’ City Council have held discussions to address delays in the redevelopment of the fish market and local market in the capital.
Minister Adam Shareef Umar and Mayor Adam Azim were present at the meeting, alongside officials from both institutions. The discussions focused on identifying the reasons for the lack of progress and reviewing relevant agreements and documentation to determine the way forward.
Plans for the redevelopment include constructing a modern seven-storey fish market on the site of the current whale meat market. The project also aims to consolidate the fish market, local produce market, travellers’ market into a single building. Temporary relocation sites for the affected markets have already been designated, though no site work has yet commenced.
Officials stated that the redevelopment will address longstanding space constraints and traffic congestion in the surrounding area. The new facility will include designated parking and aims to streamline operations in the Male’ market zone.
