The Government has launched efforts to construct 10,000 housing units to provide accommodation for people without permanent homes, with construction on 4,000 units in Gulhifalhu set to begin soon, according to Minister of Construction, Housing and Infrastructure, Dr Abdulla Muththalib.

Speaking at the sixth session of the Ahaa forum series on Monday night, Minister Dr Muththalib said the initiative aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to provide a lasting solution to the nation’s housing crisis. He emphasised that accelerating housing development is a top government priority.

The Minister also addressed unresolved issues from the Hiyaa housing scheme initiated under former President Abdulla Yameen’s administration. He noted that some individuals who received written assurances for flats under that project were later excluded during President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s tenure.

President Dr Muizzu has now instructed that priority be given to those individuals, particularly those currently without any accommodation, under the new Government housing programme set to begin imminently.

In addition, Minister Dr Muththalib highlighted concerns regarding the selection process for the 4,000 housing units being developed by the Fahi Dhiriulhun Corporation (FDC). He claimed that an extra 1,000 individuals had been added to the list through an allocation of additional points during the previous administration.
