Minister of Health Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim has reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to establishing a specialised cancer hospital, in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s presidential pledge.
Speaking at the sixth session of the Ahaa forum series on Monday night, the Minister said work to secure funding is already underway and progressing with urgency. He noted that the Government has completed the required preliminary steps, including technical feasibility assessments and the development of a concept plan.
Minister Nazim acknowledged public concern over the lack of progress on the cancer hospital, given that discussions on the matter began over a decade ago. He stressed that the current Administration is committed to delivering on the promise and is treating the project as a priority.
According to the Minister, cancer is responsible for 17 per cent of all deaths in the Maldives, underscoring the urgent need for both a specialised treatment facility and greater public awareness. He said efforts to improve awareness are being carried out with serious intent.
