Financial support for Maldivian artists is expected to begin next month, according to Minister of Youth Empowerment, Information and Arts Ibrahim Waheed.
Responding to a question from a member of the public at the sixth session of the Ahaa forum series on Monday night, the Minister said the initiative follows President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s directive to advance the creative arts and strengthen support for local artists, describing it as a key component of the Government’s cultural policy.
The Minister said the Ministry has completed the procedures required to implement the support scheme and has sought input from the artistic community during its development. Relevant regulations are currently being finalised.
A dedicated online portal is being developed through which eligible artists can apply for assistance. The Minister noted that while the platform still requires testing, the Ministry is committed to launching the support on time.
He assured artists that the Government is taking all necessary steps and remains committed to delivering on its pledge.
The Minister added that work is also progressing on a dedicated production house for artists. The facility, being developed in collaboration with the Business Centre Corporation (BCC), is expected to open later this year. Once completed, it will provide local creatives with access to production tools, studio space, and other essential resources.
