President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has called on political leaders to abandon the culture of vengeance and embrace principles that foster unity, constructive dialogue, and national harmony. The President made these remarks during the Rayyithunnaa Eku podcast, broadcast by the President’s Office.

Reflecting on the nation's journey since gaining independence on July 26, 1965, President Dr Muizzu expressed his desire for a peaceful, united society where political rivalries do not erode the country’s social fabric.

He noted that the Maldives has witnessed political hostility and revenge culture in the past, adding that he envisions a peaceful and prosperous society for Maldivians. He emphasised that political divisions often lead to the loss of national unity and peace, elements that have historically defined the Maldives as an independent nation.

Reaffirming his Administration’s commitment to justice and fairness, President Dr Muizzu stated that his Government has not detained or imprisoned anyone for political reasons and would not pursue acts of political retribution.

Highlighting the damaging effects of political hostility, he urged leaders across the political spectrum to abandon the evil spirit of vengeance that has overshadowed Maldivian politics in the past. Instead, he called for a renewed culture of respectful and constructive political engagement.

He emphasised that constructive criticism should be allowed, paving way for fruitful discussions on what needs to improve.

President Dr Muizzu also pointed to mature democracies as examples, where political competition exists without resorting to violence, division, or manipulation. He encouraged Maldivian political leaders to draw inspiration from such models and to commit to civility in public life.
