President Dr Mohamed Muizzu on Wednesday took part in a high-level engagement with the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on the Maldives, held at the House of Lords in the Palace of Westminster, London.

The APPG on the Maldives is an informal, cross-party group of UK parliamentarians that advocates for greater awareness of the country’s environmental, social, and political issues. While APPGs hold no official status, they play a key role in fostering dialogue on specific countries or policy areas.

The meeting focused on advancing the long-standing partnership between the Maldives and the United Kingdom, which spans over six decades. Discussions highlighted key areas of cooperation, including climate resilience, democratic development, and capacity building.

Addressing the gathering, President Dr Muizzu reaffirmed the Maldives’ commitment to strengthening its relationship with the UK, emphasising shared values, mutual respect, and enduring people-to-people connections. He expressed appreciation for the UK's continued support in areas such as justice sector reform, defence cooperation, climate adaptation, and institutional development.

The President also noted the rich history of educational and cultural exchanges between the two nations and welcomed the role of the APPG in fostering dialogue and strengthening bilateral engagement.

Yasmin Qureshi MP, Co-Chair of the APPG on the Maldives, underscored the international community’s responsibility to support Small Island Developing States (SIDS). She stressed the importance of increased financial assistance, technical expertise, and sustained global cooperation to address the unique challenges faced by countries like the Maldives.

Following the opening statements, the session featured interactive discussions between President Dr Muizzu and members of the UK Parliament. Participants exchanged views on enhancing collaboration in priority areas and reaffirmed their commitment to further developing Maldives-UK ties.
