Dhiraagu, in collaboration with Women in Tech Maldives, has officially launched the Girls to Code Malé Edition, a flagship initiative designed to equip young women with essential coding skills and support their entry into the technology sector.
Since its inception in 2019, the Girls to Code series has steadily expanded across the Maldives, with past editions hosted in Fuvahmulah, Kulhudhuffushi, Thinadhoo, Laamu Atoll, and Dhidhdhoo. The programme continues to grow in both reach and impact, laying a strong foundation for young women to pursue careers in technology.
In celebration of International Girls in ICT Month, this year’s call for applications saw a strong response from aspiring female coders. The 2025 edition commenced with an opening ceremony and orientation session held on 15 July, bringing together motivated participants aged 16 to 30 from Malé and surrounding areas.
Over the next three months, participants will undergo a blended learning experience that combines virtual and in-person sessions. They will receive practical training in programming, web development, and game design, with a focus on Python.
"Girls to Code is about more than just learning to code. This year’s edition introduces a broader age range and places stronger emphasis on career development. We’ve included targeted workshops to help participants make industry connections and transition into employment" - Bishaara Hameed, Senior Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility at Dhiraagu.
Aminath Shiufa, Secretary General of Women in Tech Maldives, described Girls to Code as a growing movement that empowers young women in technology, noting that this year’s Malé edition features workshops focused on coding, problem-solving, and confidence-building to promote digital literacy and next-generation skills.
Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives reaffirmed their joint commitment to bridging the gender gap in technology and contributing to a more inclusive digital economy. Through initiatives like Girls to Code, they are fostering an environment where young women across the Maldives can thrive in the tech industry.
