The Parliament has opened the Trademark Bill and the Intellectual Property Office Bill for public comment, extending an invitation to the general public, businesspersons, artisans and other stakeholders to share their views. Comments will be accepted until 1100 a.m. on July 22.
To facilitate submissions, Parliament has provided two channels for public feedback. Comments may be sent via email to the Economic Committee at [email protected] or submitted in writing to the Parliament Office.
The Trademark Bill, which was introduced on behalf of the Government on July 14, proposes a legal framework for the registration of trademarks. Its objective is to create a favourable environment for manufacturers and artisans by establishing clear procedures and guidelines. The bill also defines the scope of rights granted to trademark holders and details the enforcement mechanisms available in cases of infringement.
Specifically, the bill grants registered trademark owners the right to prevent the unauthorised use of a mark that is identical or similar to their own in relation to the same goods or services. At the same time, it outlines certain limitations, identifying situations in which these rights cannot be exercised.
In parallel, the Intellectual Property Office Bill aims to develop a formal structure for the protection and advancement of intellectual property in the Maldives. The proposed legislation provides for the establishment of a dedicated office tasked with safeguarding original business ideas and innovations. By doing so, the bill seeks to promote entrepreneurship and support economic growth through a more robust intellectual property regime.
Following their introduction, both bills have been approved by Parliament and referred to the Economic Committee for detailed examination. The Committee has stated that the review process is scheduled for completion by August 10.
