The new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) is anticipated to bring substantial improvements to the experience of receiving tourists in the Maldives. The terminal is scheduled to open on July 26, coinciding with the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the nation’s independence.

Ali Naseer, the airport manager responsible for the operations of three Soneva resorts in the Maldives, noted that the current terminal presents significant delays for arriving visitors. He observed that resort representatives are often required to wait extended periods to welcome their guests. With the expansion of the terminal and the addition of new resources, he expressed confidence that these challenges would be mitigated, resulting in a more efficient and comfortable arrival process.

Echoing this optimism, Larissa, manager of the One&Only resort in the Maldives, stated that the new terminal would provide a distinctive and memorable arrival experience. She indicated that the enhanced facilities are likely to be well received by international visitors and shared her anticipation for the terminal’s inauguration.

Similarly, Nooh Abdul Haris, Airports Service Manager at Jumeirah Maldives, commended the upgraded layout and efficient use of space in the new terminal. He noted that these features would significantly ease the process of serving tourists, allowing resort staff to deliver a higher standard of service in a more timely manner.

To ensure the readiness of the new terminal, a series of operational readiness and airport transfer (ORAT) trials are currently underway. These trials involve participation from airlines, airport representatives and travel agents, and are designed to facilitate a seamless transition once the terminal becomes operational.
