Nation mourns passing of veteran healthcare professional Kareembe

Abdul Kareem Adam, widely known as Kareembe, who dedicated more than 47 years to the Maldivian health sector, passed away on the night of July 16 at the age of 80.
His long and distinguished career began on June 18, 1961, when he joined the then Health Office as a health assistant, specialising in blood sample collection. This initial role marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to public service during a period of significant transformation in the country’s healthcare system.
As the years progressed, Kareembe held a range of positions within the Ministry of Health and its affiliated bodies, steadily advancing through the ranks. His dedication and professionalism led him to serve as Assistant Manager, then Assistant Director, and ultimately Deputy Director of the Maldives Food and Drug Authority, where he remained until his retirement on July 16, 2009.
His entry into the sector aligned with a pivotal chapter in Maldivian medical history, during which Dutch medical professionals were brought in to train local staff. Embracing the opportunity for professional growth, Kareembe pursued further training in India and Thailand.
During the early years of his career, he was stationed across various atolls for over four years, working extensively in the treatment of patients suffering from tuberculosis, filariasis, and leprosy. At a time when these diseases posed serious public health threats, his contributions were instrumental in containing their spread and improving health outcomes in affected communities.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu conveyed his condolences to Kareembe’s family, recognising his decades of unwavering service. The President acknowledged Kareembe’s instrumental role in shaping the national health sector and affirmed that his contributions had positively impacted the lives of countless Maldivians.
IIn his message, the President also noted that Kareembe had been honoured with a long service award by the state – a fitting tribute to a life marked by unwavering dedication, integrity, and service to the nation.
Kareembe leaves behind a legacy of service that will long be remembered by those who worked alongside him and by the generations who benefited from his tireless contributions to healthcare in the Maldives.
