The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has confirmed that eleven candidates have applied for two vacant positions on the High Court bench, following the elevation of two justices to the Supreme Court.
The vacancies arose after Justices Hussain Shaheed and Mohamed Saleem were appointed to the Supreme Court earlier this year. In response, the JSC opened the application process to fill the vacant posts on the High Court.
Among the applicants are Judicial Service Commission member Ali Abdul Latheef, Drug Court Judge Adam Arif, and Civil Court Judges Hafiza Abdul Sattar and Hassan Faheem Ibrahim. Former High Court Chief Justice Shujau Usman, former magistrate Mohamed Raghib Ahmed, former Criminal Court Judge Ibrahim Ali, and former Civil Court Judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa have also submitted applications. Additionally, Mohammad Shahid, reported to be a Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs, is also among the applicants.
The JSC is expected to begin the evaluation process in the coming weeks. Candidates will be assessed based on judicial experience, legal qualifications, and professional integrity. The selection process includes background checks and interviews, conducted in line with constitutional procedures and the JSC’s mandate to ensure the competence and independence of judicial appointments.
