President Dr Mohamed Muizzu joined a high-level push to promote foreign investment into the Maldives during the Maldives–UK Business Forum held in London, outlining the Government’s vision for economic diversification and improved investor confidence.
The event, organised by the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, is the eighth edition of a global business forum series and coincided with the President’s visit to the United Kingdom. It brought together British corporate leaders and investors with the aim of strengthening bilateral economic ties.
During the forum, President Dr Muizzu highlighted investment prospects across five key sectors: tourism infrastructure, renewable energy, digital transformation, fisheries and ocean innovation, and the creative economy. These sectors are central to the Government’s strategy to reduce reliance on traditional revenue streams and foster inclusive growth. The President emphasised ongoing structural reforms to enhance the investment climate, including the introduction of a new Foreign Investment Act and the reactivation of Special Economic Zones. These reforms are designed to ensure regulatory stability and attract long-term capital inflows.
As part of efforts to boost the Maldives’ international trade profile, the forum also featured the official launch of the “From Maldives” fisheries brand. The initiative is aimed at marketing Maldivian seafood globally by aligning with sustainable fishing practices and elevating its premium export value.
The forum also featured an address by Lord Marland, Chair of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council, who noted growing investor confidence in the Maldives’ forward-looking economic vision.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade and the West London Chambers of Commerce to facilitate deeper business collaboration between the two countries.
The event also included a panel discussion under the theme “Investing in the Future: A Dialogue on Maldives’ Economic Vision”, where senior Maldivian officials and UK business representatives explored joint ventures and investment pathways in sectors such as green energy, tourism, waste management, finance, and mariculture.
With the UK remaining one of the Maldives’ largest tourism source markets and a longstanding trade partner, the forum underscored a shared commitment to expanding economic cooperation ahead of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations
