The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a yellow alert from Haa Alifu Atoll to Faafu Atoll, warning of winds between 25 and 30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph.

The alert is in effect from 9.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. on July 18.

Thunderstorms and showers are expected across much of the country over the next 24 hours, with some islands likely to experience moderate to heavy rainfall. Winds will vary from 7 to 25 mph depending on the region, with thunderstorms bringing gusts of up to 45 mph.

Seas are forecast to be rough in the central and northern atolls, and moderately rough in the south, particularly during storms. The Met Office also warned that flooding may occur on some islands during high tide.

With worsening weather expected over the weekend, the public, especially those travelling by sea, are advised to stay alert and check the latest forecasts.
