The Maldives and The Commonwealth have renewed their commitment to advancing cooperation in areas such as governance, trade, and sustainable development.

During a high-level discussion held in London on July 18, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu and Commonwealth Secretary-General Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey exchanged views on shared priorities, with particular emphasis on democratic principles, institutional development, and the responsible growth of the fisheries and tourism sectors.

The talks also addressed the Maldives’ agendas, including the goal of achieving developed country status by 2040. In this context, President Dr Muizzu underscored the importance of sustained support from international partners like the Commonwealth in realising economic transformation and institutional strengthening.

Both sides acknowledged the Maldives’ role as a vocal advocate for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), especially on multilateral platforms, and discussed opportunities to elevate this role through enhanced Commonwealth engagement.
