The Department of National Registration (DNR) has launched ID card printing and distribution services in Thaa Veymandoo, a key step in the Government's efforts to decentralise essential services.
The service, now active in 27 islands, is part of a broader plan to make ID card services accessible from every atoll or inhabited island by the end of the year. According to DNR, the initiative will make the process faster and more efficient for residents, eliminating the need to travel to Malé for identity-related matters.
DNR also revealed that preparations are underway to expand ID card services to countries where large Maldivian communities reside, including Sri Lanka, India, and the United Kingdom. Malaysia became the first overseas location to offer the service.
Efforts to decentralise ID card and passport services were ramped up in November last year. Gaafu Alifu Villingili was the first location outside the capital region to receive the new setup.
