A storm that swept through parts of the Maldives on Friday evening caused significant damage in Haa Alif Muraidhoo, including to several homes and the island council secretariat.

According to Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar, strong winds completely tore off the roofs of three residential homes and the building housing the island council secretariat. He said two of the homes were made temporarily habitable overnight with assistance from the island council, local residents, the police, and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).

The Minister added that the council plans to restore the damaged secretariat building to operational condition as soon as possible, report the damaged homes to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and formally request Government assistance. He also praised the spirit of solidarity shown by the community in the aftermath of the storm.

Speaking to state media, Muraidhoo Council President Ali Sinan said that the council building’s roof was completely destroyed, causing various types of internal damage. He noted that the meeting room sustained the most damage, including the ceiling and a television unit. Temporary measures have been put in place for both the affected homes and the secretariat.

As stormy conditions continue across the country, reports of damage due to strong winds have emerged from multiple islands. The public is urged to remain cautious during adverse weather conditions and to closely follow official advisories issued by the Maldives Meteorological Service.
