Maldives Immigration has reported a positive public response to the passport issuance service introduced in Raa Ungoofaaru, following the expansion of Government documentation services to the atolls.

The service began operating in Ungoofaaru in January this year. According to data released by Maldives Immigration on 30 July, a total of 346 passports had been issued from the island by that date.

Immigration officials confirmed that the service is currently provided on a weekly basis by the Ungoofaaru team. Applications submitted online through the Imuga portal are eligible for processing in the atolls. Those opting to collect their passports from regional centres are required to pay a designated fee and may select their preferred collection point.

In a statement posted to its 'X' account, Maldives Immigration noted that the launch in Ungoofaaru had received encouraging feedback from residents. The expansion is intended to enhance access to citizenship-related documentation across the country.

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, who assumed office in November 2024, had announced the introduction of passport and national ID services in the atolls. This measure is part of a wider administrative effort to improve service delivery at the regional level.

Prior to the latest extension, passport issuance services were available in Hulhumale’ Phase 1, Hulhumale’ Phase 2, Villimale’, Fonadhoo in Laamu Atoll, and Kudahuvadhoo in Dhaalu Atoll. At that time, ID card printing services were limited to Hulhumale’ Phase 1 and Phase 2, in addition to Haa Dhaalu Kulhudhuffushi.

Since then, the Government has commenced ID card printing in 27 islands. The implementation of passport issuance services across further locations continues in line with these developments.
