Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur in some islands across the central and southern parts of the Maldives over the next 24 hours, according to the Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office).
The ongoing rainfall has been attributed to the southwest monsoon, which is forecast to continue throughout the country into the upcoming weekend. The Met Office has also indicated the possibility of light to moderate rain or thundershowers in various islands during the same 24-hour period.
In the past 24 hours, Faafu Nilandhoo recorded the highest rainfall, receiving 77.5 millimetres. The department has further advised that squally winds with speeds between 13 and 23 kilometres per hour are likely along and off the west-west coast. Wind speeds could reach up to 45 miles per hour during the day.
The Met Office has cautioned that sea conditions are expected to remain rough. Some islands may also be affected by high tide during peak tide hours.
Authorities have urged the public to take appropriate precautionary measures to prevent any untoward incidents and to reduce the risk of damage caused by the prevailing weather conditions.
