The Bank of Maldives (BML) has begun facilitating foreign currency support for overseas medical travel starting 1 August 2025, with up to USD 2,000 available for patients supported by the National Social Protection Agency (NSPA) and up to USD 1,000 for self-funded individuals.
The bank also confirmed that Aasandha beneficiaries will continue to receive up to USD 2,000 under the existing arrangements.
According to BML, NSPA-supported patients must present an official approval letter from the agency. For cash disbursements, passport and ticket copies of both the patient and caretaker, if applicable, must be submitted. For payments through telegraphic transfer, an invoice from the overseas hospital or treatment facility must be submitted along with the NSPA approval letter.
For patients travelling abroad for treatment not covered under Aasandha or NSPA, BML requires a referral letter from a doctor recommending overseas care. Supporting documentation, such as a diagnosis or medical history, must also be provided if not included in the referral. Patients must also submit appointment confirmation from the overseas provider, along with passport and flight ticket copies.
This development follows instructions issued by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in July 2025, requesting relevant authorities to arrange for patients supported by NSPA to access up to USD 2,000, and for self-funded individuals to access up to USD 1,000 through local banks for overseas medical treatment.
