The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has appointed two new judges to the High Court.

The judges appointed are former Civil Court Judge Ustaz Abdulla Jameel Moosa and former Deputy Minister of Home Affairs Mohamed Shaheed.

The appointments follow the recent elevation of two High Court judges to the Supreme Court, leaving vacancies on the High Court bench. According to the JSC, the new appointments were confirmed during the Commission’s 27th meeting, following interviews with all candidates who had expressed interest in the posts.

Judge Abdulla Jameel Moosa holds a Bachelor of Shariah and Law with Honours. With over 15 years of experience in the judiciary, he served as Magistrate of L. Dhanbidhoo Magistrate Court from 2003 to 2009, and later as a judge at the Civil Court from 2009 until his resignation in 2019. Since then, he has been practising law as a legal advocate.

Mohamed Shaheed also holds a Bachelor of Shariah and Law with Honours, earned from the Islamic University of Maldives. He previously served as legal counsel at Honey Well Trading Company Pvt Ltd between 2018 and 2023, and most recently held the position of Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Their appointments are expected to strengthen the judiciary and ensure continuity in leadership within the High Court following the recent reshuffle in the nation’s top court.
