The Maldives Correctional Service has announced an increase in the daily work allowance for inmates, the first revision to the rate in 25 years.
Since 2000, inmates have been paid MVR 30 per working day, a rate that has remained unchanged until now. Under the new structure, the minimum daily wage is set at MVR 50, with the allowance categorised into eight grades based on the type and complexity of work. Each grade increases the pay by MVR 10, meaning those in Grade 8 will now receive MVR 120 per day.
The revised allowance applies to a range of work opportunities available within correctional facilities. Inmates are assigned to different grades and tasks, which include welding, handicrafts, cement work, laundry services, and other unit operations.
The Correctional Service noted that many long term inmates make use of these work programmes as part of their rehabilitation and skill building while serving their sentences.
