Temple Marine's MY Big Fish ran aground in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll in April --
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has imposed a fine of MVR 4.8 million on Temple Marine for environmental damage caused by the capsizing of a yacht in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll.
According to the EPA, the fine must be paid within 30 days from 4 August. The penalty follows an incident on 28 April, when the yacht MY Big Fish, operated by Temple Marine as the local agent for Seal Maldives Yacht Support, ran aground on a reef in Alifu Dhaalu Atoll. The vessel was removed the following day.
The EPA stated that Temple Marine was penalised under the Maldives Environmental Protection Act, which allows for fines of up to MVR 100 million for environmental damage. The agency emphasised that, should fines remain unpaid, the Government of Maldives retains the right to pursue compensation through legal channels.
The EPA reiterated that the enforcement of such penalties aim to discourage negligence and safeguard the country’s fragile marine ecosystems.
