The Ministry of Tourism and Environment has reported that total tourist arrivals reached 1.33 million as of 5 August 2025, reflecting a 9.2 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

According to the latest statistics, the Maldives welcomed 33,584 tourists during the first five days of August, a 1.2 per cent increase compared to the same period in 2024. The highest daily arrivals this month were recorded on 2 August at 7,036, while the lowest was noted on 5 August at 6,422. The current daily average for August stands at 6,717, closely matching the daily averages seen during the high season. February and January continue to lead with the highest daily averages, at 7,646 and 6,931, respectively.

In terms of accommodation, resorts continue to account for the majority of arrivals, hosting 972,030 tourists so far this year. Guesthouses followed with 292,393 arrivals, while hotels recorded 35,394 arrivals and safari vessels received 27,668 tourists. Other facilities accounted for 967 arrivals.

China remains the top source market, contributing 14.8 per cent of total arrivals – a position it has held since 2024. Russia and the United Kingdom followed with 11.8 per cent and 9.3 per cent, respectively. Italy and Germany, which rounded out the top five, have switched positions compared to last year, with Italy now accounting for 7.1 per cent and Germany 7.0 per cent.

Chinese tourists continue to play a growing role in the Maldivian tourism market. To cater to this demand, the national airline Maldivian is operating a seasonal weekly flight to Shenzhen until 21 August 2025, in addition to its existing routes to Chengdu, Beijing, and Shanghai launched earlier this year.

Meanwhile, Malaysia Airlines has announced plans to expand its services to the Maldives from seven to eleven weekly flights starting 26 October 2025. Malaysia serves as a key transit hub for Chinese travellers, further supporting connectivity between China and the Maldives.
