Blood services at the newly established Thalassaemia Centre in Hulhumalé Phase 1 were not disrupted, according to the Chief Executive Officer of Malé Group of Hospitals, Abdul Razzaq Haleem, who stated that electricity supply from STELCO was restored promptly.

His statement came in response to speculation on social media suggesting that the absence of a backup power supply had halted blood transfusions and placed stored blood at risk of disposal. Razzaq explained that during the outage, the facility operated on backup power. While a brief interruption occurred, transfusions continued without delay, with only a five-minute suspension of the cross-matching process. He stated that electricity supply has since been fully restored.

Razzaq confirmed that all stored blood remained safe and uncompromised. He appealed to the public to avoid circulating unverified information that could cause unnecessary concern during sensitive situations.

The Thalassaemia Centre, located in the Orange Building in Hulhumalé, was established to deliver specialised care for patients. The initiative was introduced under the current Administration, with the building prepared in a short period of time by the Maldivian National Defence Force.

To support patients, free transportation has been arranged for thalassaemia patients and children travelling from Malé City to the facility. The Government is also progressing with plans to establish a dedicated hospital for thalassaemia treatment in Hulhumalé, which will provide all necessary care for patients nationwide once operational

In addition, the Government has reinstated the bone marrow programme for thalassaemia patients and continues to send a significant number of children abroad each year to undergo the procedure.
