Member of Parliament for Baarah constituency Ibrahim Shujau, has said the Government is now positioned to begin its full governance agenda following the settlement of major debts.

Speaking at a rally in Haa Alifu Filladhoo to mark the party’s victory in the local council and Women’s Development Committee elections, MP Shujau said the Administration had repaid significant financial obligations, including a USD 400 million currency swap, despite doubts raised by the opposition.

He said the Government had also repaid USD 925 million in loans within the month, noting that substantial State resources had been directed towards clearing debts accumulated under previous administrations.

MP Shujau alleged that earlier governments had secured loans against key State assets, including Dharumavantha Hospital, IGMH, schools and land in Malé, adding that the current Administration had worked to stabilise the financial position.

He said development projects had faced delays due to the burden of debt repayments, but noted that with these obligations addressed, the Government is now moving towards implementing its broader development agenda while maintaining access to essential services.
