The Malé Traffic Police Capacity Building Programme has been held in the capital, inaugurated by Assistant Commissioner of Police Asim Abdulla, Head of Malé City Police.
The event brought together senior police officials, including Chief Superintendent of Police Hussain Sameer, Head of Traffic Police and Road Management, and Superintendent of Police Ahmed Fasih, Head of Road Safety Awareness and Prevention. Commissioned officers and members of the traffic police force were also in attendance.
A presentation entitled "Veshi Heyo Mujuthamau" was delivered at the Maldives National University Auditorium by Mohamed Shaan, Human Resource General Manager at WAMCO. Shaan spoke about the public’s perception of traffic police and proposed measures to strengthen their work on the roads. He described how officers are often seen providing guidance during road accidents and other incidents, and noted that they have traditionally explained specific violations to offenders before taking formal action.
Shaan observed that the introduction of traffic checkpoints had led to increased compliance with road regulations. He also highlighted the swift measures taken by officers to restore normal traffic flow after congestion or accidents.
Emphasising the importance of treating all citizens with courtesy and fairness, Shaan expressed his hope that such standards would be upheld consistently. He proposed the creation of an online platform to make the provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act easily accessible to the public, thereby improving understanding of penalties for traffic offences.
He further proposed the introduction of a monthly open day to solicit public feedback on the work of the traffic police and to identify areas for operational improvement.
