Government spends over MVR 513M on higher education this year

The Ministry of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development has disbursed over MVR 513 million to students pursuing higher education through loans, scholarships, and the Government’s free degree programme in 2025.
From January 1 to August 7, MVR 311.4 million was issued as student loans, with 282 new loan recipients and 382 graduates this year. A total of 1,676 students are currently studying under the scheme in 40 countries, including the Maldives.
The Scholarship Scheme has disbursed MVR 101.7 million so far this year, with 45 new students commencing their studies and 48 graduating. Currently, 607 students are enrolled under scholarships.
Meanwhile, MVR 100.4 million has been spent under the Free Degree Programme, which now supports 8,357 students. This year, 1,391 new students enrolled, and 2,226 completed their degrees.
The ministry said these figures highlight the Government’s ongoing efforts to improve access to higher education locally and abroad.
