The National Integrity Commission (NIC) has flagged serious misconduct by seven police officers in their handling of the investigation into the death of Zakiyya Moosa Maniku and has referred the case to the Prosecutor General’s Office for a decision on possible charges.
According to Senior Public Prosecutor Ahmed Shafiu, the NIC has alleged that the officers committed wrongful conduct in the discharge of official duties, misused their positions, and obstructed justice, law and order, and other state functions. The Prosecutor General’s Office has classified the matter as serious and is assessing available evidence to determine whether to proceed with charges or request further investigation.
Zakiyya was found dead in Noonu Holhudhoo earlier this year, prompting widespread criticism from island residents and her family, who accused the police of major failings in the investigation. President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, during a visit to the island, met with the community and assured justice in the case.
The NIC, tasked with ensuring that police and other uniformed services act lawfully and maintain integrity, has faced public criticism in recent years over delays in addressing such cases. The case is being reviewed under the Government’s stated commitment to allow independent institutions to function without interference.
