The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that 60 per cent of the Faafu Nilandhoo harbour development project has been completed.

The project, awarded to MTCC in May 2023 for MVR 66.6 million, aims to improve harbour facilities and coastal protection on the island.

According to MTCC, ongoing works include dredging and filling of the harbour basin. The development scope features a 130-metre rock canal on the island’s north-east side, a 131-metre stone revetment, a 194-metre sand-filled breakwater, a 30-metre T-jetty, a 237-metre concrete quay wall, a 100-metre concrete jetty, a concrete ramp, and a 75-metre stone revetment for beach protection, along with an access platform with a five-metre-wide pavement are also planned.

The project was launched to address long-standing issues faced by Nilandhoo residents and visitors, particularly the difficulty in docking and accessing services due to inadequate harbour facilities. Coastal protection measures are also included to counter erosion, which has been a persistent concern for the island.
