Baa Kamadhoo has become the latest island in the Maldives to receive a Bank of Maldives (BML) self-service ATM, inaugurated by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu as part of the Government’s plan to bring ATM facilities to every inhabited island.
The newly installed ATM offers round-the-clock withdrawal and deposit services, along with facilities for credit card and loan repayments. The service aims to improve banking accessibility for residents, reducing the need to travel to other islands for basic financial transactions.
President Dr Muizzu, accompanied by BML CEO Mohamed Shareef, officially launched the service during his visit to the inhabited islands in Baa Atoll, making the first withdrawal from the machine. A commemorative bank card was also presented to the Kamadhoo Island Council, with Council President Hassan Zareer accepting it on behalf of the community.
The initiative is part of a nationwide rollout jointly implemented by the government and BML. So far, ATM services have been established in all inhabited islands of six atolls, including Alif Alif, Baa, Dhaalu, Meemu, and Kaafu. More than eight new ATMs are expected to be operational in the coming months.
According to BML, the expansion of ATM services will help bridge banking gaps in the Maldives, supporting both personal and business transactions in local communities.
The new banking service in Kamadhoo is expected to significantly boost local tourism on the island, which currently boasts 13 guesthouses.
