President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced the decision to hand over Baa Maamaduvvaree to Baa Hithaadhoo.

Speaking to Hithaadhoo residents during his visit to the island, the President said Maamaduvvaree has strong potential for tourism, transport, cultural activities, and other economic ventures, and should be used to generate wealth for the people.

The island has been, however, awarded to Coastline Investment to be developed for tourism although no progress has been made on the contract. Owing to the lack of progress in the project, President Dr Muizzu confirmed that the Ministry of Tourism and Environment will work together with the Attorney General’s Office to terminate the existing agreement.

The President added that Maamaduvvaree management will be transferred to Hithaadhoo Island Council once the legal formalities have been completed.

The handover of Maamaduvvaree, a welcome decision by the residents, will create significant opportunities for economic gain for the local community. The President urged the Council and the residents to utilise Maamaduvvaree’s resources in a sustainable manner that would enrich the community.
