Baa Maalhos Island Council has requested a dedicated beach for tourists during a meeting with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, highlighting its potential to support the island’s growing tourism sector.

The meeting, held during the thirteenth and final stop of the President’s Baa Atoll tour, brought together the Council, Women’s Development Committee (WDC), and institutional heads. Council members stated the Maalhos land-use plan supports local tourism expansion and that designated tourist facilities, including a beach, would further boost the industry.

The Council also called for the expedited development of the harbour, upgrades to electricity services and capacity, relocation of the island’s powerhouse, completion of the football field, and a permanent solution to flooding on the island.

On education, the Council stressed that no infrastructural improvements have been made to the island’s school in the past 15 years, highlighting the urgent need for a multipurpose hall, adequate staff room facilities, and an administrative office.

In response, President Dr Muizzu assured the Council that the issues raised would be given due consideration and provided detailed updates on ongoing projects through ministers and heads of State-owned companies accompanying him.
