President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has said that every resident is equally important to him, regardless of the size of the island’s population.

Speaking to residents during his visit to Baa Maalhos on Thursday, the President reflected on the groundbreaking ceremony for the island’s new police station held earlier in the day. He announced that practical work to establish police stations on all inhabited islands will begin this year, with some expected to be completed within the same period, stressing that such developments had been long neglected in smaller communities.

Linking this to development efforts in Maalhos, President Dr Muizzu pledged to fast-track the island’s harbour project, describing it as a top priority. He said the harbour work will be accompanied by related initiatives, including relocating the powerhouse to a new site and constructing a football field, both of which are already underway. Land has also been allocated for a fitness and recreation centre, with construction to begin this year together with the installation of an outdoor gym.

Addressing Maalhos’ persistent flooding problem, the President said the island’s low-lying nature requires a technical study to determine long-term solutions, adding that a pumping system will be installed as part of the measures to address the issue.

In addition, President Dr Muizzu revealed that the health centre project has been awarded to a contractor, with work to begin soon and all necessary services included.

In the education sector, the President acknowledged the need for a multipurpose hall, additional classrooms, a staff room, and a science laboratory at the island’s school. While noting the space constraints, he assured that the Government is prepared to construct new educational facilities, even if it means building a completely new school, emphasising that there are no budget limitations for the project.

The President also pledged to improve the island’s roads, reaffirming that Maalhos’ development is a priority for his Administration and that the Government will continue to support further improvements in line with community needs.
