President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that Haa Dhaalu Keylakunu will be developed as an eco-tourism destination, with the project contracted to the Maldives Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC).
The President made the announcement during his ongoing visit to the atoll, where he also revealed broader plans for tourism expansion across South Thiladhunmathi.
Keylakunu, spanning over 80 hectares, was declared a protected area in 2018 and is renowned for its unique ecological features, including dense mangrove wetlands, coral reefs, turtle nesting grounds and rare bird species such as the white-tailed tropical bird. The island also hosts the only Avicennia marina mangrove forest of its kind in the Maldives, making it an environmental asset of global significance.
While past administrations have considered developing the island, this is the first time the Government has committed to moving ahead with an eco-tourism model that emphasises conservation. Officials have said the project will safeguard Keylakunu’s fragile ecosystem while opening sustainable tourism opportunities in the north.
In addition to Keylakunu development, President Dr Muizzu also confirmed that the Government will also invite investment to develop a city hotel near Kulhudhuffushi Airport. He added that the Economic Ministry has completed the necessary paperwork for the initiative and urged the local council to cooperate with the ministry to ensure its success.
