Member of Parliament for North Henveiru constituency, Ahmed Aifan, has issued a clarification after a video clip circulated on social media appeared to show him blaming the previous Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) administration for the genocide in Gaza.

The parliamentarian said his remarks during a recent parliamentary debate were taken out of context due to omissions in the video, leading to a misinterpretation of his position.

According to MP Aifan, his intention was to highlight that the escalation of violence in Gaza on 7 October 2023 occurred while the Maldives was under an MDP supermajority government, but that administration had not taken decisive action against Israel. He contrasted this with the current Administration, which he said has taken steps to stand against the genocide and occupation of Palestine.

He explained that his comments were directed at opposition members making what he described as misleading statements during the debate, and not intended to suggest that the MDP was responsible for the genocide itself.

The controversy arose after the shortened video circulated on social media, which made it appear as though MP Aifan had directly attributed the genocide in Gaza to the MDP.
