President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has authorised a series of prison reforms aimed at expanding rehabilitation opportunities for inmates, linking their participation to potential sentence reductions and pardons.
The decision, made following a Cabinet meeting on December 1, 2024, is part of a broader effort to enhance the correctional system in the Maldives.
The reforms were based on a proposal by the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, presented during the Cabinet meeting.
The new framework integrates rehabilitation programmes with a structured system for pardons, parole, and sentence reductions. Inmates who successfully complete programmes outlined by the Ministry and the Maldives Correctional Service will qualify for these benefits.
Key elements of the reforms include expanding work opportunities for inmates both within and outside prison facilities and enhancing their employment prospects post-release. The plan also prioritises the expansion of community service initiatives as part of the rehabilitation process.
To ensure effective implementation, the President has tasked relevant Government agencies with specific responsibilities and set a clear timeline for achieving and monitoring the key objectives of the reforms.
The initiative shows the Government’s dedication to helping inmates reintegrate into society and reducing repeat offences through rehabilitation programmes and community involvement.
