President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has returned to Malé following his visit to the United Kingdom, where he emphasised the urgent climate financing needs of the Maldives and other Small Island Developing States (SIDS) during a high-level briefing on private capital mobilisation.

Speaking at the session hosted by His Majesty King Charles III under the Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), President Dr Muizzu called for expanded debt-for-climate and debt-for-nature initiatives, stronger green finance partnerships, and more accessible financing mechanisms tailored to vulnerable island nations. He outlined practical pathways to increase private investment in climate-resilient development, stressing that SIDS face immediate risks and require equitable access to climate funds.

The briefing brought together leaders from multilateral development banks and major global financial institutions to discuss accelerating private capital flows for sustainable development and global climate transitions. The President’s interventions highlighted the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to strengthen resilience and the need for targeted international cooperation to achieve long-term sustainability.

The visit also offered an opportunity to deepen the Maldives’ engagement with high-level partners and advance the country’s advocacy for fair and effective climate financing aligned with global sustainability goals.
