Mercure Maldives Kooddoo Resort and the MaRHE Center of the University of Milano-Bicocca have partnered to conduct research on tropical marine ecosystems in Gaafu Alifu Atoll, with a particular emphasis on studying the area's resident dolphin populations. The research focuses on understanding why these dolphins remain resident, a rare phenomenon in the Maldives.

The research will involve identifying dolphin species, analysing population structures, and using molecular ecology techniques to study their diet. In addition to dolphin research, the project includes studies on coral reefs and reef fish to enhance understanding of the southern Maldives' marine ecosystems.

Led by Professor Paolo Galli, Director of the MaRHE Center, the initiative provides fieldwork opportunities for marine biology students. Two master’s students from the International Marine Sciences programme are also conducting fieldwork, supported by the Mercure Maldives Koddoo Resort. This research includes photo identification, vocalisation analysis, and environmental DNA studies.

This partnership represents a pivotal step in advancing the understanding and conservation of the southern Maldives' distinctive marine ecosystems. Findings will be shared with stakeholders during an event at the resort on 12 December, 2024.

The MaRHE Center, established in 2009, aims to carry out research and educational activities and carry out development and sustainability initiatives for the protection of the natural environment.
