The Governments of Maldives and Japan have signed an agreement to enhance the mobility and operational efficiency of the Maldives Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The Exchange of Notes, formalising this partnership, was signed at a ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today. The agreement was signed by Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr Abdulla Khaleel and the Ambassador of Japan to the Maldives, Takeuchi Midori.
This project is part of Japan’s Economic and Social Development Programme and will provide the ACC with 300 million Japanese Yen (approximately USD 2.158 million) in financial assistance.
The primary goal of the project is to enhance the ACC’s mobility infrastructure, enabling the Commission to respond more effectively to corruption allegations and conduct investigations across the Maldives' scattered islands.
During the ceremony, Minister Dr Khaleel stressed the significance of this initiative in strengthening the Maldives’ fight against corruption and promoting good governance. He highlighted that the project will support a more transparent and accountable government by ensuring quicker and more effective action against corruption.
The Minister also expressed his gratitude to Japan for its ongoing support and noted that this project marks a significant milestone in the 57-year-long diplomatic relationship between the two nations. Japan’s assistance, Dr Khaleel added, continues to play an essential role in the socio-economic development and governance efforts of the Maldives.
The ceremony was attended by senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Finance, the Anti-Corruption Commission, and the Embassy of Japan, marking an important step in the continued cooperation between the two countries.
