President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that the Government will increase loans next year to support the establishment of Refrigerated Sea Water (RSW) systems on fishing vessels.

During his visit to AA Rasdhoo, President Dr Muizzu explained that loans are already being provided for the installation of RSW systems, which have begun to benefit fishermen by enabling them to safely refrigerate and store fish.

The initiative aims to empower fishermen and entrepreneurs by reducing Government control and giving more autonomy to individuals within the industry. President Dr Muizzu conveyed that the Government aims to reduce its control over the fishing industry, instead allowing fishermen and entrepreneurs to take the lead.

In addition, the President highlighted that island councils wishing to take over the operation of ice plants will be allowed to do so. This move aligns with the Government’s commitment to working closely with citizens and decentralising services for better access and efficiency.

President Dr Muizzu also reaffirmed the Government’s prioritisation of the fishing industry, recognising it as a vital sector for the growth of the Maldivian economy. He noted that Rasdhoo currently has 13 fishing vessels, with plans to expand the fleet and enhance support for fishermen in the region.

The President also stressed the importance of ice plants for fishermen, describing them as essential for maintaining the quality of their catch. He added that the establishment of additional ice plants is a key part of the Government’s manifesto and will be prioritised in the coming year, with funding sourced from Saudi Arabia and other funds.
