Maldives sees strong start to 2026 with 8.3% rise in tourist arrivals

The Maldives has recorded 143,211 tourist arrivals as of 20 January 2026, reflecting an 8.3 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

According to the latest statistics released by the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, the daily average of tourist arrivals currently stands at 7,161. The highest number of arrivals so far this year was recorded on 11 January, when 9,596 tourists entered the country, while the lowest was recorded on 1 January with 5,929 arrivals.

A breakdown of arrivals by entry point shows that Velana International Airport (VIA) remains the main gateway, handling 141,363 tourists during the period. Maafaru International Airport recorded 529 arrivals, while Gan International Airport handled 451 passengers.

In terms of accommodation, resorts accounted for the majority of arrivals with 98,698 tourists, followed by guesthouses with 37,356 arrivals. Hotels recorded 3,964 tourists, safari vessels 3,071, and other accommodation facilities accounted for 122 arrivals.

Russia emerged as the top source market with 21,149 tourists, followed by Italy with 16,953 arrivals, the United Kingdom with 12,509, China with 10,170, and Germany with 8,867. This represents a shift from last year’s trend, when China led the source markets, followed by Russia.

Tourist arrivals are expected to continue rising as the peak season progresses. February has historically recorded the highest number of tourist arrivals in recent years, and similar trends are anticipated this year.
