Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has stated that no discussions have been held with the Government regarding an increase in fees for vessels operating in the Malé North Harbour area.

The company issued the clarification following rumours circulating in the harbour area claiming that the Government was in talks with MPL to raise the fees charged to boats using the facility. In a statement, MPL said the claims were baseless and contrary to facts, stressing that no such discussions have taken place.

MPL noted that efforts are currently underway to expand services at the Malé North Harbour, including plans to provide water and electricity services for vessels using the ‘A Zone’. The company said these improvements aim to make services more convenient for vessels operating in the harbour.

According to MPL, policy changes introduced on the 14th of this month were intended to improve harbour operations by reducing waiting times for cargo vessels and streamlining access to services.

The company also clarified that no fees are currently charged for fishing vessels operating in the ‘D Zone’, ‘E Zone’, and ‘F Zone’ of the harbour. MPL further stated that the only change made after the reopening of harbour zones following the Boduthakurufaanu Magu development project was the restriction on vehicles that are not registered with the relevant authorities from entering certain zones.

The company urged the public to avoid spreading false information that could create unnecessary concern, noting that Malé North Harbour provides essential services for a large number of residents and businesses.
