Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has said the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has yet to present a renewed policy direction that would justify a fresh mandate from voters.
Speaking at the inauguration of the PNC campaign office in the North Maafannu constituency, Minister Saeed said elections offer the public an opportunity to reflect on how political parties have exercised power in the past and to assess governance records when making their choices. He noted that the electorate had previously entrusted the opposition with a strong mandate, and said it was important to consider outcomes delivered during that period.
The Minister pointed to economic challenges faced towards the end of the previous administration, stating that fiscal constraints had significantly limited State capacity at the time. He also raised concerns about the impact of governance practices during the period on institutional performance and public confidence.
Minister Saeed further questioned the extent to which the MDP advanced decentralisation reforms while in office, noting that despite strong advocacy on the issue, progress in strengthening local governance structures had been limited.
Highlighting developments under the current Administration, the Minister said the Government led by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu had prioritised economic stabilisation over the past two years, including efforts to strengthen State reserves. He also referred to measures taken to enhance the role of Women’s Development Committees, noting that council employees are now formally included within empowerment structures through updated legal provisions.
