The Ministry of Finance and Planning has stated that it is closely monitoring potential impacts on the Maldives’ financial and economic situation arising from ongoing instability in the Middle East and is preparing precautionary measures to mitigate any adverse effects.

In a statement issued on 1 March 2026, the Ministry said it is working in coordination with relevant state institutions to assess possible risks and ensure swift action where necessary. Efforts are focused on safeguarding macroeconomic stability and maintaining the uninterrupted delivery of public services.

The Ministry noted that the Maldives sources a significant portion of its fuel imports through Oman and highlighted that any disruption to global supply chains could pose challenges. The Government is working closely with the State Trading Organization (STO) to ensure the continued and uninterrupted supply of fuel to the country.

Given that the Maldivian economy is heavily reliant on tourism, the Ministry is also closely analysing potential impacts on tourist arrivals and international travel flows. Based on these assessments, adjustments to fiscal policy will be introduced where necessary to maintain economic balance and stability.

The latest data published by the Maldives Monetary Authority reveal that the country’s foreign reserves remain above previously recorded thresholds. The Ministry stated that this strengthens the Government’s capacity to respond to external economic shocks, finance essential imports and implement required policy measures effectively.

The Ministry reaffirmed that maintaining a robust public finance system and ensuring overall economic stability remain its foremost priorities, adding that the Government will continue to take all necessary steps to sustain financial confidence during this period of global uncertainty.
