President Dr Mohamed Muizzu revealed plans for a national service programme aimed at providing employment opportunities for the youth of the Maldives, during the Victory Day ceremony.

The programme, which seeks to enhance national security and individual freedom, will require participation from children who have completed their O-levels at the age of 16, particularly those who are unable to pursue higher education.

President Dr Muizzu highlighted that every year, approximately 2,500 to 3,000 students fail their O-level exams and do not progress to A-levels or secure jobs, with an additional 500 to 1,000 students failing to complete their A-level studies. The new initiative will offer military training to these youths, enabling them to transition into careers within the armed forces or police service. The Government has allocated Rs 400 crore in the 2025 budget for the programme, with an ongoing annual commitment of Rs 400 crore thereafter.

The President anticipates that the initiative will see 4,000 young individuals join the military and 1,000 the police force over the next four years. Beyond job creation, President Dr Muizzu asserted that the programme aims to combat issues such as drug abuse and various social problems, thereby fostering a healthier community. He emphasised that the programme would also mitigate economic challenges while cultivating a well-trained, military-ready youth.

Under the framework of the National Service programme, the goal is to recruit an additional 1,000 young people each year, expanding both military and police personnel significantly. With the implementation of this initiative, a total of 5,000 youths will gain access to employment opportunities, along with improved training for those who might otherwise be deprived of educational pursuits.

President Dr Muizzu expressed optimism that this initiative would not only bolster national security but also yield substantial benefits for the entire country. The programme is set to officially launch this year under the title "National Service" as part of the Maldives' commitment to empowering its younger generation.
