The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) has signed agreements with China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) to strengthen its infrastructure and expand capacity across key areas of its operations.
MIFCO stated that three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed during a ceremony held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources. The agreements focus on enhancing the company’s cold storage, fish processing, and export capabilities.
Under the MoUs, several major projects will be carried out. These include the development of a cold storage and blast freezing facility in Thaa Hirilandhoo, as well as the expansion and completion of an ongoing fish collection and cold storage project in Gaafu Dhaalu Thinadhoo.
The agreements also outline plans to expand storage capacity at the Addu Fisheries Complex. In addition, a new processing facility will be established in Addu to produce value-added fish products for export.
MIFCO noted that CMEC, one of China’s largest engineering corporations, will partner in implementing these projects to improve operational efficiency and capacity within the fisheries sector.
The company stated that the initiatives are expected to support the sustainable growth of the fisheries industry, while contributing to the Government’s efforts to increase value-added exports and further develop the sector.
