The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission (MMBC) has introduced a new regulation outlining how it will review complaints and take enforcement action under the Maldives Media and Broadcasting Regulation Act.

The regulation was published in the Government Gazette on Tuesday and has taken effect.

The Commission said the new rules establish clear procedures for receiving and assessing complaints, as well as for investigating cases through a transparent and fair process. It also defines the range of measures that can be taken when violations are identified.

Under the regulation, broadcasters that repeatedly breach the rules may face fines ranging from MVR 50,000 to MVR 250,000. In more serious cases, where content is considered harmful to Islam, national security, public order or public health, the commission has the authority to halt broadcasts through relevant state agencies. Equipment used to provide such services may also be seized through the police with a court order.

Print media, including newspapers and magazines, may face fines between MVR 5,000 and MVR 100,000 for repeated violations. The regulation also allows authorities to stop the publication of content deemed harmful under the same criteria.

The rules further extend to individuals working in the media. The commission may require corrective action, including issuing public apologies, publishing corrections or withdrawing statements.

The Maldives Media and Broadcasting Commission is responsible for overseeing the regulation and development of the country’s media and broadcasting sector.
