Maldives Meteorological Service has issued a white alert for large parts of the country, forecasting strong winds and rough seas across central and southern atolls.
According to the Met Office, the alert is in effect from Noonu Atoll to Addu City between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on May 14. Winds are expected to range between 19 and 24 miles per hour, with gusts forecast to reach up to 45 miles per hour during showers. Sea conditions are also expected to remain rough in the affected areas.
The Met Office stated that heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in several parts of the country over the next 24 hours, while swell waves may affect some islands during high tide. Authorities have advised the public and seafarers to remain cautious during the adverse weather conditions.
Meanwhile, Maldives National Defence Force has advised seafarers to exercise caution due to rough sea conditions in central and southern atolls. Authorities urged vessels to avoid unnecessary travel unless proper safety measures are in place, including ensuring the availability of lifejackets, communication systems and operational safety equipment.
The MNDF also advised cargo vessels against overloading and urged organisers of diving and water sports activities to closely monitor weather advisories issued by the Met Office. Authorities further called on the public to remain prepared for possible flooding and strong winds during the ongoing rainy conditions.
