The Elections Commission has opened voter re-registration for individuals wishing to vote from locations other than their registered polling stations in the upcoming North Hithadhoo by-election 2026.

According to the commission, the re-registration period began at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday and will remain open until 1:00 p.m. on Monday.

The EC stated that the opportunity is available for voters who wish to cast their ballots from locations different from where they voted during the 2026 Local Council and Women’s Development Committee elections. Voters previously registered to vote in Malé, Hulhumalé and  Villimalé for those elections will automatically remain registered in those locations for the by-election.

The commission added that voters registered in resorts, prisons or islands other than their permanent residence will have their registered address listed as their polling station for this election.

Eligible voters can check their registration details through SMS by sending “VR” followed by their ID number to 1414 or through the commission’s online voter registration portal.

Applications for re-registration can be submitted online through the EC Re-registration Portal or My Portal using a verified eFaas account.

The North Hithadhoo parliamentary seat became vacant following a Supreme Court ruling that former MP Mohammed Sinan had an unpaid debt that remained unsettled despite a court judgment.

According to the voters’ list published by the Elections Commission, 4,114 people are eligible to vote in the by-election.
